Retirees downsize their homes

At a time when many have lost their savings to recessions, housing designers are catering to a retirement segment that looks for smaller homes and better utilization of space. These homes are designed to be more energy efficient and have good storage options while costing much lesser. Storage options are being increased through reducing hallway spaces, adding storage under stairways and above the kitchen cabinets.Costs of home designs are also being cut through cheaper kitchen appliances, eliminating bathtubs in bathrooms and eliminating granite countertops and fireplaces. As the financial markets had crashed many retirees started to cut back on the spending plans they had laid for their future. This segment is now opting for more value of money or may downsize to a warmer climate. Many retirees are also considering to stay in their current homes or to move close to relatives so they can have better affordability there. Statistics byAARP revealed that approximately 8 out of 10 adults are cutting down on the money they spend and are saving more funds than they had done previously.

Centuria redevelopment discussed

Representatives from various renowned real estate organizations came together in Fort Lee on April 20, 2009 as talks for taking over the Centuria project went on. The mandatory meeting was conducted in the presence of approximately fifty people who came from diverse backgrounds of planners, architects, developers, realtors and attorneys. Prestigious names included representatives of the Trump organization, Silverstein associates, Langan engineering and Grubb and Ellis. Various issues of the project were discussed, questions answered and the deadline extended to July 17, 2009. The mixed use development of the Centuria project has been an issue of contention and the 15.7 acre area has been lying vacant for over 30 years now.

Dumont homes evacuated for an hour

Normal residential life and work was thrown out of gear in Dumont when an accident caused many homes to be evacuated in the region. The accident that took place on Wednesday, April 22, 2009, was caused when a United Water truck hit a natural gas line on Shadyside Avenue in Dumont. Fearing that there may be a gas leak, many residential buildings in the area were evacuated. People were however allowed back into their homes after an hour, when the authorities cleared the area of any possible contamination. The incident is said to have taken place when a new valve was being installed outside a home by the United Water workers. The backhoe struck a gas line and the authorities were immediately pressed into action. Besides the Dumont Police officers, officials from the Public Service Electric and Gas trucks and the Dumont fire department were also pressed into action. Residents and people in commercial complexes were alerted that they check their appliances that depend on natural gas and report if anything is amiss.
