Bergen County Schools – School in Dumont to close

For residents of Dumont whose children attend Bergen County Parish schools, it may be news to learn that a gradual downsizing of three schools is on the cards. On Wednesday, February 15, 2006, the Bergen County School announced that it would merge three Bergen County Parish schools and may also close two others. It was stated that the Newark Archdiocese was downsizing the Catholic school system through consolidation of various schools, as it is no longer necessary for each parish to have its own school. The merger of Dumont St. Mary’s, Bergenfield’s St. John the Evangelist and New Milford’s Ascension will take place from September 2007 onwards. The merger would lead to two campuses called Transfiguration academy. Residents at Dumont were especially troubled to hear that the school in Dumont would close. Bergen County Transportation – Light Train to Tenafly and North Bergen

Transportation for Bergen county home owners and residents will improve, now that the third phase of theHudson Bergen light rail line project is on the right track as NJ Transit receives $3.6 million in federal funding to conduct environmental and engineering studies. The funding will also help to get the 11-mile North Bergen County branch up and running. If this works out as scheduled then construction on the northern branch could commence by 2008 and complete by 2011. Once in place, this branch would connect the residents of Tenafly to North Bergen. In actuality, it would run from Tenafly to Englewood, and pass through Leonia, Palisades Park, Ridgefield and Fairview, before it ends in North Bergen County. This phase of the plan is the most challenging and once overcome; it would do a whole lot of good to the project, the cost of which has been cut by 50% to $500 million.

Bergen County Transportation – Transit in Tenafly

Tenafly residents can now attend the session that will be addressed by officials from the New Jersey Transitregarding the issue of mass transit in Eastern Bergen County. Comments and questions on the proposed Northern Branch line will be the main area of discussion. The meeting will be held from 3pm to 5pm and 7pm to 9pm at the Clinton Inn, Tenafly on Tuesday, 21st February 2006. The Northern Branch line is proposed to run over 11 miles and would form a part of the $500 million plan where self propelled diesel cars would run every fifteen minutes between Tenafly and North Bergen. The entire line is expected to be completed by the year 2012. Besides this, two train stations, one at south of West Clinton Avenue and the other on Piermont, near Cresskill are also proposed to come up.

Bergen County Real Estate Development – Luxury Condominiums and Office Space Construction

Luxury Condominiums, additional office buildings and a hotel are scheduled to be built in Bergen County. While developers plan to add new Real Estate such as condominiums for sale at to the Highland Cross Redevelopment area in Rutherford, Bergen County residents worry as to how this would affect the character of the community. The plan that was put forth on Monday, February 13, 2006 showcased Bergen County Real Estate such as condos, a 216-room hotel, retail stores and recreational facilities. If approved, the proposed plan would come up at the former industrial site on Route 17. While the borough had approved a plan for the construction of two office buildings and a hotel on a 23-acre site in the year 2001, developers now propose to include luxury condos and double the site space for redevelopment. The reason cited for this real estate development is the lack of office space in Bergen County.

Earthquake Proof Housing in Bergen County

Bergen County’s Real Estate scene is at turbulence as a controversial housing development plan off Route 202 is playing much trouble in Bergen County. The site involves the nearby Ramapo fault line and includes worst-case scenarios of earthquakes that have been taken into account. The plan called Vista Bahn II proposes 13 specialty homes for sale, which would come up on 35.5 sloping acres between Seminary, and Marion drives. The design included gigantic retaining walls that would be up to 14 feet high and would be required for at least ten of the lots. However while the public was invited for the presentation, none were given the opportunity to comment on the same. A meeting is scheduled to be held on April 10, 2006 with Alexander Lapatka, the Vista Bahn engineer. Board members have suggested that a seismic specialist be consulted on how building or blasting may affect the fault line.
