Bergen County Schools to Promote Online Safety Awareness

An increasing number of schools in Bergen County are now making efforts towards the safety of their students. While the schools of Cliffside Park organized the PRIDE program with the support of the Department of Corrections, schools in Cresskill raised concerns about how safe children were in the online world – with cyber predators and cyber bullies – and parents needed to watch out for the Internet surfing habits of their children. In this regard, investigators from the computer crimes task force of the Prosecutor’s office gave a presentation to over 30 parents of students from Cresskill, St. Therese school, Tenafly and Alpine. They stressed on the prevalence of the Internet and how social networking had really brought cyber crime home. They also showed how cyber predators can use online data and find out sensitive information about where a child lives, her interests and what school she attends. In another event, the Cresskill Middle School helped its students prepare for their mentoring through the Heroes and Cool Kids mentorship program at the school.

High Home Prices in Bergen County

Statistics in Bergen County and various other parts of North Jersey revealed that home prices in many places of the region are higher than the paychecks. While low mortgage rates and falling home prices have made North Jersey homes easier to buy, experts state that the region continues to have one of the most expensive real estate in the country. Purchasing a home in the region along with high property taxes still continues to be a challenge for many. Statistics on property sales data by The Record also showed similar results. In a region where a median household has an income of $89,500, $357,500 for a Bergen County Home is a good purchase. However the median prices of homes in the region is at $432,000. In its Bergen County towns too, median home prices in 2010 were noted to be $381,250 (Teaneck), $452,000 (Edgewater), $717,500 (Ridgewood) and $412,000 (Cliffside Park). Many buyers also added that homes that fall within their likable price range often need too much in terms of repair. With income rising slowly, the situation has become even more pressing for home buyers. Experts state that unless the rates of income rise rapidly, or until banks ease their standards of mortgage, home prices may head further downwards.

Environmental Concerns Discussed in Tenafly

Raising environmental concerns, the Northern Valley League of Women Voters and the Green Team in Tenafly’s Temple Sinai have recently held discussions on the moral and environmental issues of hydrofracking. Hydrofracking is a process whereby fractures are created in shale for extracting natural gas. Prevalent since the mid 20s, the process became popular over the years as experts look for newer sources of energy. As per the Environmental Protection Agency, the process involves combining a range of chemicals, sand and gallons of water which are then injected into shale at high pressure. This is done across horizontally drilled wells that are up to 10,000 feet deep. The pressure creates fractures and the sand keeps them open so that natural gas can flow out and be collected. While this is a promising source of energy, it is associated with negative affects too. For example, it poses a threat of irreversible groundwater contamination and wrong waste disposal. Also the chemicals used in hydrofracking are linked to cancer, raising new health concerns.
