Teaneck fire department wishes Good morning to its residents

The Good Morning wake up program that was started by the Teaneck fire department in May 1985 and has come a long way now. This program was started by two firefighters and those who enroll in the program receive a phone call between 8am 9am, 365 days a year. The phone call helps to check on any medical emergency that may need attention. If members of the program do not lift the phone, another call is made five minutes later. If the call is still not taken, welfare members are sent to the residence of the member to check. While the program was designed especially for the elderly segment, today many people who feel that the program could be beneficial to them have enrolled in it. In case of a medical emergency, the fire fighters are certified first responders also known as Emergency Medical Technicians. They take immediate action till the ambulance comes to the scene. In order to improve services to the neighborhood, the team also conducted fire inspections in all homes of the members.

Fort Lee plans to improve downtown
New laws in Fort Lee will now alter many things in the look of the downtown neighborhood. As per these laws introduced by the mayor, awnings must be in decent colors. Also the store names and addresses should be marked clearly for viewers. Also only ten percent of the store’s window should be used for displaying signs with 50% of the message being in English. The size and shape of lettering on the boards would also be controlled. The designs of sidewalks and pavers would be regulated and sidewalk planters would be encouraged. As per experts, these regulations are necessary to bring in some order in the chaotic downtowns and make the area more lucrative for businesses planning to set shop here. Currently the condition of Fort Lee’s downtown is quite bad with cluttered windows and flashy signs. Many other towns like Paramus and Pompton lakes have also put regulations in place for their downtowns and Fort Lee hopes to do the same. The proposed laws have been put in place by a seven member committee appointed by the mayor. It is currently being written by the borough planner and would be placed before the borough council within sixty days.

Centuria project for Fort Lee has new owners

The Centuria project that was being planned in the downtown of Fort Lee by the Town and County developers has now been put for sale. This mixed development had been formally unveiled and approved in 2005. The proposed plan included 210,000 sq ft of retail space, office space, over 800 luxury condominiums and also a 250-room hotel. All this would stretch over the large sixteen acre site that borders Lemoine Avenue, Bridge Plaza South, Central Road, and Main Street near the George Washington Bridge. With the site plans and approvals in place, the developers now hope to find new owners, who will take the project further. While the pricing details have not been released, the Cushman & Wakefield’s metropolitan area capital markets group of East Rutherford is handling the Fort Lee real estate deal. Experts estimate that the asking price for the project may range anywhere from $750 million up to even $1 billion. This is because the market is quite good for upscale retail markets and luxury homes. Besides selling the project, options for joint ventures and financing for different aspects are also being considered.

Bogotá provides budget for education

$275,000 will now be cut from the school tax levy in Bogotá, as per an announcement made by the borough council and the school board. While voters had rejected this aspect on election day, authorities have decided to incorporate it. As per the new ruling, the $18.7 million budget for the academic year 2008-09 will have a $11.82 million tax levy. This represents a 7% increase from last year. The new reductions were incorporated only after discussions at many meetings indicated a strong need to do so. While voters had rejected the proposal for $12.09 million tax levy, many are pleased with the new tax levy and feel that this change would help improve the education system in Bogotá. The budget for education also includes scope for new furniture, new textbooks and also new teachers for maths and library media specialists.
