Bergen County Keeps Clean

Various municipalities in Bergen County have now found a new way to keep their surroundings clean without having to depend much on their individual budgets. The Clean Communities Grant, which is provided by the New Jersey Clean Communities Council, is providing many that ray of hope. With the financial crisis, state aid has been cut down for many towns, a factor that has resulted in lack of funding for many programs. In such trying times, the Clean Communities Program, funded by New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) is providing funds for three core areas. These are picking up of litter, enforcing litter abatement ordinances and public education/ promotional programs in the area. Various towns of Bergen County have benefited through funds from the program. Towns like Alpine received $4,979 as funds, while Cresskill,DemarestFort Lee and Tenafly received $13,544, $8,418, $53,248 and $23,367 respectively. Besides grants, the organization also lends out equipment to non-profit groups and municipalities if requested. These and few other towns have been pleased with the grants, which have been put to use.

Home Remodeling Month is Here

The month of May is being recognized across US as the national home improvement month. As spring is the ideal time for fresh ideas and new beginnings, many homeowners choose this as the perfect and ideal time to remodel their homes and come closer to creating their dream homes. In this regard, the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) offers advice and guidelines on how home owners can best plan their remodeling activities. Planning early and getting into action is one of their foremost suggestions. Instead of waiting till summer season, home owners would benefit from planning now and hiring contractors as soon as possible. This will help them ensure that work starts on time. A thorough inspection of the property to check for required repairs is also important, so that nothing gets overlooked. Budgeting must also be a primary concern, though it often gets overlooked. Consider the amount you are ready to spend on remodeling, without making your finances unstable. Finally, top realtors advise that the insurance policies be reviewed so as to add the current remodeling projects being undertaken.

Cresskill Students Work for the Environment

Soon after the Earth Day celebrations, residents from various towns of Bergen County are looking for new ways to help the environment. School students from Cresskill’s Merritt Memorial School also took upon themselves to work for this cause. In this spirit, an entire week was dedicated to earth-friendly educational activities. The events for this program were further coordinated with the support of the Home and School Association (HSA). Under this program, students participated in diverse eco-friendly activities like preparation of compost bins, understanding habitats of local raptors and also understanding the quality levels of drinking water. The last activity took place at the Cresskill Brook, where students were made to see and identify the macro-invertebrates residing in the waters. School officials added that such events were important for young children as they were ready and eager learners. Also understanding the simple links in the ecosystem also highlights how saving these can protect our environment at large. Other activities included identifying endangered animals and understanding their importance, preparing paper from recycled materials, tree planting and energy conservation.

Fort Lee and Cliffside Walk for Good Health

Various residents of Fort Lee and Cliffside Park will get together on May 16, 2010 for good health and a long life.
