Schools of Bergen County to improve syllabus

The various schools of Bergen County and the neighborhood may now improve their academics in order to compete better with other schools. This came up when the State Commissioner of Education, Lucille Davy, came up with a plan for secondary schools on September 16, 2008. As per this plan, all New Jersey schools would have to take up a broader and deeper range of subjects like sciences, mathematics and languages. In order to cope up with the above students would need to work harder, an aspect that is not being looked upon very well by many students. However the State Commissioner of Education feels that enhancing the curriculum is important. With many developments taking place around the world in diverse fields, students can understand them only if their curriculum provides scope for it. She also underlined that the purpose of schooling was not just to provide employment but to create all-round citizens.

Fund raising event in Bergen County

Residents of Bergen County can now look forth to the golfing event being conducted on September 15th, 2008 at the Ramsey Golf and Country club. Organized by YWCA of Bergen County and the Ridgewood Chamber of Commerce, this event will showcase a fall golf classic at the grounds. The main highlight of the event would be Bill Evans, a celebrity golfer and also the meteorologist for ABC-TV. He will join participants in the various golfing contests. Prizes for the events include a trip to California. Money raised during the event would go towards the college scholarship program in Ridgewood High School. Some funds will also support the programs of YWCA, Bergen County. These programs range from education scholarships, fitness programs, and therapeutic camps to summer camps for underprivileged and needy children. Those interested in participating can reach the venue and register themselves from 10 am onwards. The main events will be conducted from 12:30 pm and continue into the evening. More information on registration and sponsorship can be availed by contacting (201) 445-2600.

Teaneck scraps ordinance

An ordinance in Teaneck that had restricted the usage of two family homes in select neighborhoods will soon be scrapped. The ordinance that was suggested in early September would have reduced the number of two family homes in Teaneck. However it would not have protected current two family homeowners from rebuilding in case such homes were brought down. In new sessions council members agreed that the ordinance had many loopholes and it be scrapped. In its place, a new ordinance must be suggested where limits on the size and height of homes be examined. While many council members agree with this new concept the mayor expressed displeasure stating that the existing ordinance had already been revamped many times before and two years work had gone for naught. Study had involved understanding regions with two family homes and demarcating them from regions with a majority of single family homes. The initial ordinance came up when it was realized that many single family homes were being replaced by two family homes. The ordinance was introduced to retain the character of the town, but is being revamped many times since then.

New look expected for Tenafly business

The establishment of a Business Improvement District may soon become a reality for downtown Tenafly. Once an ordinance regarding the district is introduced on September 23rd, 2008, business owners can operate in a district with a good range of shops, suitable parking amenities and a better shopping experience. Many feel that an economically sound and sustainable district will serve the needs of Tenafly residents better. The new concept of having a business district in Tenafly that serves modern needs came up two years ago by the Chamber of Commerce. The success of the concept in other regions like Englewood and Rutherford has promoted officials to expect more from their downtown. Tenafly’s downtown currently has a less variety in stores. Parking space is insufficient and traffic signals are misleading. Finally the area lacks aesthetic appeal and could do with plenty of additions. Officials state that if a business improvement district is created in the region, it will be managed by an Executive Director. The officer in charge would be responsible for promoting the district with the right events and for selecting businesses that can be operated in the region. Funds for improvement would be taken in the form of fees from commercial property owners in the district.

Foreclosures rise in New Jersey

As the housing market continues to be in a crisis stage, statistics showcase that foreclosures are on a rise in New Jersey. The number of foreclosure homes increased by 50% as compared to the same period in 2007. What is more alarming is that figures in New Jersey far outdo the national figures, where foreclosures were reported at a 27% rise as compared to August 2007. Figures for the month of July are however less alarming, says RealtyTrac Inc., the organization that closely monitors foreclosures in the nation. Figures showcased that while national foreclosures increased 55% over the month, foreclosures in New Jersey rose only by 11% from July 2007 to July 2008.
