Leonia has approximately 9000 inhabitants in a 1.5 square mile area. The borough features tree-lined streets, an excellent school system, seven parks, ten churches, two synagogues, a modern library, a community theater, a volunteer fire and ambulance corps, a thriving recreational program for all ages and a shopping district. Leonia was settled by Europeans in 1668. Leonia thrived as an artists colony in the 1930s. Early films featuring Charlie Chaplin and the Keystone Cops were shot in Leonia. Leonia has been the residence of five Nobel Prize winning scientists, and home to many professors, writers and artists.
