Leonia has approximately 9000 inhabitants in a 1.5 square mile area. Leonia was settled by Europeans in 1668.

 

Leonia thrived as an artists colony in the 1930s. Early films featuring Charlie Chaplin and the Keystone Cops were shot in Leonia.

The Leonia Public Schools serve students in Kindergarten Twelfth grade. Enrollment in the district is 1,752, of which, 289 are Edgewater students in grades 7-12. An Early Childhood Learning Center is available for 4-year olds. This tuition-based program provides a half-day of academic activities to prepare children for kindergarten.

 

The district has 175 classroom teachers and 23 educational support personnel. Average class size in all 3 schools is 21 students. The budget for 2005-2006 is $21,454,000.00.

 

The Leonia High School Academy for Pharmacy, Medicine and Technology is in its third year. The academy prepares students for careers in the medical field. Leonia High School's graduation requirements are among the most rigorous in the state. The school has nine periods per day with no study halls.

The Bergen Performing Arts Center (bergenpac) offers world class entertainment just around the corner.The Bergen Performing Arts Center (bergenPAC) was conceived in the echoing corridors, empty rehearsal rooms and grand performance hall of the former John Harms Center, which closed to the shock and heartbreak of Bergen County's large community of culture lovers, families and students.In April 2003, a group of concerned citizens, headed by Englewood resident Frank Huttle III, formed bergenPAC and developed a business plan to forge a true public/private partnership, engaging all sectors of the community and bringing together corporations, governments and residents, each adding the committment and support necessary to revitalize this unique arts center.

During much of the 20th century Leonia's location, small size, and culture attracted a large number of academics and artists of all kinds. For this reason Leonia is sometimes referred to as "the Athens of New Jersey".

 

In 1890, landowners began marketing plots in Leonia to professors at nearby Columbia University. Another example is the opening in 1915 of the Leonia School of Illustration by Harvey Dunn, and the artists' colony that subsequently emerged over the next decade.
