Municipal budget for Demarest

The borough council of Demarest has now released its new budget for this year. This budget is worth $7.5 million and shows a hike of 2.5% from last year's budget. As per the new budget, the local tax levy would raise the amount by 3.5% to make it $5,015,464. With these new rates, a home owner in Demarest whose house is assessed at an average of $670,000 would have to pay $78 more than last year in taxes. The main issues that have influenced this year's municipal budget for Demarest are a reduction in the state aid worth $80,000, increase in utility costs worth $20,000 and increase in gasoline costs worth $5000. Other issues to have influenced the tax hike are increases in pension contributions and library costs worth $ 105,000 and $39,000 respectively.

Schools tighten rules in Dumont

School authorities in Dumont have tightened up their process as parents of students are now required to furnish more details about their children who go to Dumont schools. As per new guidelines, parents now need to provide more proof of their residency from September 1, 2008. Required papers include driver's license of Bergen County photo ID, recent electricity or gas bills, phone, television or water bills, vehicle registration or bank statement and deed or mortgage documents. Also every student will now be required to re-register after every three years. Finally, the process has been centralized so that families would have to present documentation at the superintendent's office for receiving a certificate of residency. This move has been put in place to enable Dumont officials to easily weed out students who are illegally enrolled in the schools here.
