Elderly residents of Bergen County avail special services

With the largest number of senior citizens in its neighborhood, Bergen County is now seeing a rise in related services. Statistics reveal that as the number of ageing people has gone up, the number of health care workers in the region has also dramatically increased. In the region of Bergen County alone, percentage of elderly population aged 70 and over has increased by 2% from 2000 to 2006. The number of health care and social assistance workers has also risen by 56% from 2001 to 2006. This has been noted to be the largest percentage hike among the 21 counties of the state. In Bergen County, towns like Fort lee, Fair Lawn, Teaneck and Paramus show greater number of elders. Thus, these towns also have a health care provider in their vicinities. Health care companies state that the major reason for increase in their services is because of increased life spans, lesser time for younger people to look after ageing parents and increased need for assistance during old age. While health care workers are present throughout the state, they are mainly concentrated in regions with bigger numbers of senior citizens. Services include basic care providing such as delivering birthday cakes to home care while recovering from illnesses and to ensuring that the members are availing good health care.

Town of Teaneck offers easy parking

In new developments, the township of Teaneck started a computer decal program for residents of Teaneck. As per this program, vehicles that have a valid decal will not be subject to parking lot restrictions in select regions. Parking spaces have been allotted with messages indicating ‘commuter decal parking only’. In such areas, registered commuters can park vehicles with valid decals in excess of mentioned time slots. These currently include Teaneck Road/ Beveridge Street, Teaneck road/ Church Street, Teaneck road/ Orchard Street, Queen Anne road/ De raw avenue, and American Legion drive/ North Street/ Chestnut Avenue. Decals are made available to Teaneck residents at an annual cost of $100 for every vehicle. These documents are non transferable and only two decals can be availed for every house. In order to avail this facility, residents need to show proof of residency. Documents relevant to the vehicle registration and driver’s license will also be required. Copies of these documents can be submitted at the municipal office located on 818 Teaneck Road. More details on the new program and queries if any can be addressed through phone at 201 837 4811 or email at admin@teanecknjgov.org.

Closter tries to economize

As per a borough plan, the police officials of Closter have now taken the initiative to cut down on overtime costs. This is being done in order to avoid a formal policy that would otherwise ban overtime in all cases except emergencies. Under this new plan, police officials will leave shifts uncovered, even if it means dropping the standard number of three officials per shift. However as per plan, officials can be called for duty at overtime rates. This plan was put in place after the police negotiated their latest contract with the borough. In this regard, council members postponed their decision to their next quarterly review of cutting expenses. Police officials are also negotiating on their latest lawsuit as per which police officials have been accused of imposing illegal ticket quota. The borough on the other hand, considers this plan as a viable means to economize, especially when borough funding is short by $490,000. Officials at the borough state that over time is one of the major areas where excess borough funding is spent. Largest contributors to overtime were sick leave and vacations.

Home remodeling adds value

Many home experts note that adding details to a home may increase its value in the selling market. Little details added in a home make it more useful as the space is well utilized. Among all spaces in a home, decks most often offer the scope for plenty of improvement. Many remodeling investments are also noted to be put in for an attic bedroom, kitchen or basement remodeling or even adding a sunroom. A survey by the Remodeling Magazine in 2007 revealed that attic bedroom remodels were quite popular at 77%, basement and kitcen remodeling followed at 75%, while the percent that chose to add a sunroom as part of remodeling totaled 59% of the survey. This as given scope for many remodeling agencies that operate in and aroundBergen County. These agencies report that initially people would come to them with a plan but now many come with their home blueprints asking for remodeling suggestions. Many also agree tat remodeling is more viable. Where it would only cost $30,000 for remodeling an average basement, it often costs much more to add something to a home. Thus with a little innovation areas may be converted into bedrooms and bi levels and split levels can be created for enhanced space.

New emergency alert system in Dumont

Residents of Dumont and Teaneck in Bergen County can now benefit from the new emergency alert system. The Citizen Communication Center or C3 was formally launched in Dumont in June 2008 and many residents are signing up to avail its services. Using this system, the borough can send emergency messages to residents regarding any issue. Officials stated that getting started on the system was easy. All that residents needed to do was to go to the site online, provide details regarding their phone numbers, cell numbers and email addresses. Emergency notifications would accordingly be sent through these media, to ensure that the user definitely gets the message. Officials also added that this system offers increased flexibility as compared to their previous system that used reverse 911. Unlike the reverse 911, the C3 enables officials to send messages only to people in the borough and not to the entire town or region. Those interested in availing services can visit dumontnj.net and register themselves.
