Bergen County on Forbes Most Expensive ZIP Codes

The Forbes list of the 500 most expensive ZIP codes is out yet again and various Bergen County towns are featured on it. The town of Alpine ranked 4th in the 2010 list. This was quite a fall from its second place in 2008 and first place in 2007 and 2009. Experts stated that the median home price fell 8% over 2009 to $3.8 million. Saddle River featured on the list too at the 79th position. The town of Demarest ranked 231, Tenafly ranked 328, Closter ranked 380 while Ridgewood stood at 428. The top three slots went to three California towns of Duarte, Atherton and Rolling Hills. Bergen County real estate figures are indicative of a declining luxury market. While various homes are listed today, few are selling as a result of the continuing financial crisis from 2008. In the luxury segment, only three homes from the over $5 million mark sold in Bergen County. This was a decline from home sales of 10 such homes in 2007. While the ranking is concerning, officials of Alpine are not too worried. Ranking are just figures … Alpine continues to be a great place to live, they were quoted to say.

Luxury Home Sells in Alpine

The Forbes list placed Alpine at the fourth position of the most expensive ZIP codes. In recent transactions, a luxury Alpine home stretching over two acres sold in the region for over $4 million. This home was listed as a six bedroom contemporary house and stayed on the market for one month. In this short duration of time, home buyers were found and it was sold to them for $4.69 million. In a market which has experienced many downs, this sale has definitely upped the hopes for many. Real estate experts state that it is only a stray case amidst a hundred others. However, few also state that this home got sold easily because various factors worked in the direction. For one, the property was in excellent condition and came with a cabana that included a living room, kitchen and two baths. Secondly, it was well advertised both on the multiple listing services and also on the Internet. It also featured in various magazines aimed towards the luxury segment. Finally, the house was truly a luxury home with its nature friendly ponds, brooks, waterfalls, bridges and specimen gardens.

Events in Englewood

As the month of October begins, residents in the town of Englewood have many events lined up for them. Few events are being hosted by the Flat Rock Brook Nature Center. Toddler times, aimed at toddlers, is a program that will take place on 12th October, 2010. This program will feature 45 minute sessions where toddlers are exposed to science based stories, crafts and also an outdoor hike. Pre-registration is required from both members and non members of the center. Besides events for toddlers, the organization will also conduct nature discovery events for the 4-5 years age group. Children can participate in six sessions of nature exploration. Finally, under big kid adventures, the center will conduct science themed story and outdoor hike for the 6 to 8 years age group too. On October 10, 2010 the center will also conduct ‘yoga by the pond’, whereby beginners and regular practitioners can participate in a yoga session with a certified expert. Also on October 16, 2010, residents can enjoy the beauty of autumn through a ‘fall walk’. More details about these events and registration fee and process can be availed from their website at flatrockbrook.org.

Tour de Fort Lee

Residents of Fort Lee came together on October 3, 2010 to celebrate yet another annual session of the ‘Tour de Fort Lee’. This event, which has fast become a local tradition, was originally designed by a grassroots organization to support the academic programs in public schools. Over hundred people participated in either the 12 mile bike ride or the two mile walk. Both parents and children showed equal enthusiasm and braved the chilly winds for supporting this good cause. The Fort Lee Education Foundation sponsored the event for the fifth consecutive year, demonstrating its commitment to the cause of education. The Foundation, over its years of service, has brought in motivational speakers and promoted education through the difficult times of financial crisis. Parents and elders, who participated, stated that they did so as they wanted to see the good old things of their era. Many students were seen to volunteer for the organization by handing out T-shirts and helping participants enroll.

Greening Programs in Bergen Towns

The towns of Englewood, Tenafly, Rutherford, are among the five names in Bergen County that have been short-listed to avail grants from the program of ‘Sustainable Jersey’. Under this program, 34 towns across the entire state will share $220,000 worth of grants that will be put to use for environmental welfare. Under this context, the towns of Tenafly and Englewood received grants worth $10,000 each. Using these funds, the town officials in Englewood will count and assess the trees in their locality. For this purpose, they would use modes of aerial photography (for mapping steep slopes and wetlands), soil assessment and planning the monitoring of sensitive regions. An environmental resource inventory would be devised by Tenafly to help in the management of land capacity, conducting site plan reviews, development of ordinances, management of storm water issues and open space management. After creating a database of its trees, the towns would also run educational campaigns for promoting greenery and maintaining it. The program of ‘Sustainable Jersey’ is a venture of the state league of municipalities and the Municipal Land use Center at the College of New Jersey. Funds for the grants have been sponsored by Wal-Mart.
