In new developments the school district of Alpine received funds under the Bergen County Utilities Authority2009 Environmental Challenge Grant Program. Through this program, the Alpine public school received $1000 as grant money. According to officials, these funds will be used for creating environmental awareness and executing related activities. A total of 72 public and private schools across the county have benefited from the program and have received funds. These include Cresskill Middle School, Dwight Englewood School, Japanese Children’s society in Englewood Cliffs and also Harrington Park School. These schools will use the funds in diverse ways such as energy conservation, green clubs, and other green initiatives. The Alpine school in particular will use the amount for expanding its current recycling program through the purchase of recycling containers. School authorities say that this will help bring recycling to the outdoor campus and recreational field. Approximately $70,000 was granted to the different schools at a ceremony held at theBergen Community College in Paramus.

Bergen County towns improve transport facilities

The towns of TenaflyClosterEnglewood and Hackensack will soon see improvements as state and local officials announced grants for these and many other towns across the state. 49 Bergen County towns and 19 in Passaic were among the 457 grant winners. A total sum of $104 million has been granted statewide under the municipal aid program by the state Department of Transportation. From this pool of money that forms the Transportation Trust fund, approximately $10 million has been granted to Bergen County alone. In the region of Tenafly, the funds will be used to repair the bumpy road along West Clinton Avenue. In the region of Closter, $195,000 has been granted as transportation funding. This amount will be used for repairs along West Street. Besides this, in the region of Englewood the amount will be used for improving sidewalks to provide better facilities for children walking to school. The $200,000 granted for Englewood will help upgrade sidewalks along the South Woodland Avenue so that visitors to two schools and two synagogues will benefit.

Englewood marks 150th anniversary

The town of Englewood is attractive to residents and home buyers for many reasons. One of these is its historical background: this year marks 150 years since the town was founded. To mark this important occasion, the Englewood Historical Society is conducting trolley tours across some of the important sites in the region. These include historic sites, important public buildings, important monuments of architecture and also homes of well known Englewood residents. While one such tour was conducted on 18 October 2009, another tour of this kind is scheduled to be held on 1 November 2009. The tour will commence from the new 4 West Diner on South Van Brunt Street. Those interested in attending the tours will need to reserve their seats, as each trip will be limited to 60 people only. The sites will include the Liberty school, Liberty square, Mackay Park, East Hill Synagogue, St Cecelia’s church and the Dwight Morrow High School. Homes of celebrities Eddie Murphy and Dizzy Gillespie will also be a part of the tour. For more details on the trip, and information about reserving seats, contact Beverly Mitchell at 201-871-4265 or bmitchell@nr.rr.com.

Bergenfield school gets state grant

Residents of Bergenfield can now benefit from improved education facilities, as the high school begins work on starting a career academy in 2010. With $100,000 being given in state grants, these funds will be utilized by the high school for students interested in pursuing nursing as a career. The curriculum for this course will be designed by an advisory board comprised of members from the high school, local colleges, private businesses and the medical profession. Approximately nine schools were provided such grants across the state, but Bergenfield school is the only one that will utilize the funds totally for a course on nursing. Other schools intend to use their funds for a mix of diverse courses like mass media, engineering and business studies. While the Bergenfield high school already has a nursing program in place, these funds will be used to make the course more challenging and expand the school’s partnerships with related organizations. Students will also get the opportunity to interact with practitioners on a first hand basis.
