Tenafly Middle School

Tenafly Middle School, serving grades six through eight, is regarded as one of the educational institutions of its kind in the region. In fact, it is among the very few New Jersey and Bergen County schools that have received a distinguished score of 10 out of 10 from the GreatSchools.org rating system, the country’s leading source of information on school performance. The 10-out-of-10 score is based on this Tenafly school’s standardized test results, very much reflecting the high levels of academic performance of the students at Tenafly Middle School. Almost 90 percent of Tenafly Middle School students scored at or above proficient on standardized tests in every subject tested – math, science, and language arts literacy. That compares to state averages that run between 60 to 85 percent.

Teachers and Class Size in Tenafly Middle School

Partially to thank for the high levels of academic performance is the student-to-teacher ratio at Tenafly Middle School, which stands at 9 to 1, compared to the state average of 12 to 1. Extensive studies have demonstrated that when class size is reduced to less than 20 students, students usually improve their academic performance, especially in early grades.

However, it is not just class size or academics that allow a school to provide a strong and nurturing environment for students. Teacher quality, extracurricular activities, and the involvement of the community are all important factors as well. The surrounding Tenafly community itself has reviewed the school and gave it an average rating of four out of five stars, based on the categories of teacher quality, principal leadership, and parent involvement.

Tenafly Middle School Extracurricular Activities

A variety of after-school programs and extracurricular activities are offered by Tenafly Middle School as well, from sports to debate and the performing arts. This includes such student favorites as band, orchestra, video/film production, chorus, dance, photography, theater/drama, and the arts (ceramics, painting/drawing), as well as sports such as football, rock climbing, softball, basketball, volleyball, and martial arts. And the students excel on this front as well. In fact, the middle school’s 8th grade string orchestra won first place in the American String Teachers Association’s National Orchestra festival, earning it the prestigious title of number one public middle school orchestra in the United States.
