Criticism for lack of transparency , absence of written minutes of meetings and  budgets were  voiced by various Tenafly  business owners in the recent councils meeting.

The BID is financed through a charge to the Tenafly businesses of a few hundreds of dollars per year. One of the critics called for the BID to be dissolved and merged instead with the Chamber of Commerce.

The Tenafly Business Improvement District was established back in 2009 with a stated mission to ” promoting Tenafly as a preferred shopping, eating, and residential destination. The Business Improvement District (BID) is committed to adopting an inclusive approach toward strengthening not only the downtown, but the all of the business districts in Tenafly. This includes improving Tenafly’s economic viability by supporting existing businesses and encouraging the establishment of new enterprises and cultural activities that complement existing businesses and services throughout the town.”
